Top 30 at 30

Having reached this milestone in life I thought it might be a good idea to note 30 lessons I’ve learned in 30 years. Here goes (in no particular order)

1 What the culture is the culture grows.

2 Fight fire with water/overcome evil with good.

3 No matter how full you might feel, there’s always room for dessert.

4 Never listen to the end of a sentence which begins with the words “I’m not trying to tell you how to do your job but…”

5 Prayer works.

6 When it’s only half-time, everything is possible. (Istanbul 2005)

7 Only idiots think that tall people experience different weather conditions than short people.

8 Microsoft Works is an oxymoron.

9 Many are the plans in a man’s heart but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. (Prov 19:21)

10 Time flies when you’re online.

11 Beware of copying a common hairstyle – I fell victim to ‘curtains’ in my teenage years.

12 If steak is on the menu you will be disappointed if you order anything else.

13 Telling hairdressers/barbers that you work in a church is one of the best ways to end the conversation – enabling them to actually cut your hair without talking nonsense.

14 The grass is not greener on the other side.

15 When a conversation begins with the words ‘I was just about to phone you’ the person is usually lying.

16 Things will not be less busy next week.

17 Everyone appreciates commitment and is frustrated by lack of it.

18 Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

19 Even if your receipt is three metres long the shop assistant may still call it your ‘wee receipt’ as they hand it to you.

20 Online displays of affection should be avoided for everybody’s sake.

21 Other people’s dreams are boring.

22 Grace is amazing.

23 Emails with the subject title ‘you’ll like this’ generally mean the exact opposite.

22 Traffic lights, level crossings and photocopiers can sense if you’re already running late.

23 You become like what you worship.

24 Tobacco Onions from the Ramore Wine Bar are not for sharing.

25 Back up your coursework every two or three seconds.

26 Making a list of 30 lessons can be harder than initially anticipated.

27 Tall, Grande and Venti are stupid measurements which irritate most people who prefer the ‘small, medium and large’ options.

28 Regularly journalling thoughts and prayers is a great way to be reminded of God’s faithfulness and adequacy.

29 Presence should always be desired more that presents.

30 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.

  1. loving this… you did however fail to mention a very important one…

Never play leapfrog with a unicorn

  2. Michael, so many of these are too true! I laughed so hard…and thought pensively at the more serious ones! Definitely no sharing tobacco onions, that's a cert.

Congrats on the big 3-0 boyo! I'm sure you've heard this at least 100 times this week…but it's all down hill now!
